JEWELLERY QUARTER GEM IS SAVED- April 2008

English Heritage has announced today the purchase of J W Evans & Sons in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter [which featured in the Birmingham Post in August].

The sale, facilitated by city centre specialist estate agent Maguire Jackson, marks the start of urgent repairs to the Grade II* listed building.

Tony Evans, third generation owner of the 130 year-old family business, can now look forward to his retirement secure in the knowledge his family’s history and a landmark of Victorian industrial heritage will be secured for future generations to enjoy.

Philip Jackson, director of Maguire Jackson estate agents, says, “we are delighted that English Heritage has found the resources to take on the initial stages of saving this outstanding historical property from decay.

“When Mr Evans first showed us round the property last year, we were stunned at the amount of equipment and paperwork that had been preserved for so long.  It was like entering a time capsule.

“It would have been a shame to have seen this Jewellery Quarter landmark lost through lack of funding or hidden away by developers.

“The Jewellery Quarter is a stunning example of Birmingham’s heritage and we need to ensure that it retains the mix of old and new development that makes it so special.”
