The Jewellery Quarter Paints a Creative Picture - June 30, 2006

Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter has been re-born as the city's ?cultural quarter' for creative businesses, according to Phillip Jackson from the city centre specialist agents, Maguire Jackson. Jackson, who specialises in the Jewellery Quarter, explained why the area is so popular for creative businesses.

"Because of the scale of the buildings, the network of professionals, low costs and the creative heritage of the Jewellery Quarter many creative businesses want to move here," he explained. Claire Dawkins of Claire's Galleries in Tenby Street concurs with this sentiment. "I chose this area to launch my gallery because it's such an up-and-coming part of the city with a large creative community," she said.

Rhonda Wilson, MBE, creative director of the UK's International Festival of the Image, Rhubarb Rhubarb, enthuses that "the Jewellery Quarter offers unlimited possibilities. There's a freedom for creatives to fulfil their own needs in terms of homes and spaces for their organisations."

Matthew Higginbottom, another artist who moved to Birmingham from London four years ago, believes that the properties available in the area are suitable on so many levels.

"There's an abundance of characterful old buildings that were originally developed for the jewellery industry. They have good natural light and are affordable, I expect to see the area flourishing in the next few years," he said.
